Rocky Mountain High — 11-Day Self-Guided Colorado Motorcycle Tour
Ride a 1,055-mile Colorado loop linking Denver, Manitou Springs, Royal Gorge, Salida, Durango, the Million Dollar Highway, Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Glenwood Springs, Independence Pass, Breckenridge, Rocky Mountain National Park, and Estes Park. The itinerary includes eight riding days, ten nights, and a free day in Durango.
Begin in Denver, then ride approximately 100 miles of mountain curves and river roads to Manitou Springs. Day 3 continues for 110 miles to Salida, with the Royal Gorge Bridge and a winding route along the Arkansas River providing the day’s centerpiece.
The first long stage covers about 200 miles from Salida to Durango through southern Colorado prairie and the foothills of the San Juan National Forest, with Pagosa Springs and Chimney Rock identified as stops. A free day in Durango allows time for the historic Durango–Silverton train, rafting, hiking, horseback riding, off-road excursions, or simply exploring town.
Day 6 follows Highway 550 for approximately 110 miles through Silverton and Ouray to Montrose. The Million Dollar Highway, high San Juan passes, mining towns, cliffs, and mountain views make this one of the tour’s defining rides. Continue the next day through Black Canyon of the Gunnison to Glenwood Springs.
The return across Colorado stays equally dramatic. Ride through Aspen and over 12,095-foot Independence Pass, then pass Twin Lakes and Leadville before reaching Breckenridge. The next stage crosses Rocky Mountain National Park from west to east and finishes in Estes Park. A final 90-mile ride passes St. Catherine’s Chapel and Golden before returning to Denver.
The booklet advises layers, rain gear, offline maps, early fuel stops, and advance lodging reservations for rapidly changing high-country conditions.
Daily stages range from 90 to 200 miles, leaving time for Royal Gorge, historic mining towns, river corridors, hot springs, mountain villages, and national-park overlooks. The Durango rest day divides the loop naturally: the first half moves south through Colorado’s interior, while the second half climbs through the San Juans and crosses the state’s highest paved passes on the way back to Denver. Several stages rise above 10,000 feet, so the character of the ride can change quickly with elevation and weather.
