Moto Guzzi Motorcycles: A Brief History
Moto Guzzi was founded on March 15, 1921, in Mandello del Lario, Italy, by Carlo Guzzi, Giorgio Parodi, and Giovanni Ravelli. The company's first motorcycle, the Normale, was introduced in 1921, followed by a series of successful racing motorcycles. Tragically, Giovanni Ravelli died in an airplane crash shortly after the company's formation.
After World War II, Moto Guzzi produced a range of motorcycles, including small-displacement models for commuting and larger touring bikes. Moto Guzzi motorcycles also achieved considerable success in racing during this period, winning multiple Grand Prix championships and the famous Isle of Man TT races.
In 1967, Moto Guzzi introduced the V7, a motorcycle powered by a 700cc V-twin engine. This engine configuration would become a signature feature of Moto Guzzi motorcycles. Over the years, the V-twin engines were refined and enlarged, leading to the development of iconic models like the V7 Sport, the Le Mans series, and the California touring bikes.
In recent years, Moto Guzzi has kept the tradition alive by continuing the V7 III series and adding the V9, the California 1400, the adventure-oriented V85 TT, and its most recent model, the V100. Moto Guzzi motorcycles are known for their distinctive transverse V-twin engines, unique styling, and a dedicated following of enthusiasts.
Most Popular Moto Guzzi Motorcycle Models
Moto Guzzi Griso 1100
Part sport-tourer, part cruiser, part sportbike, the Moto Guzzi Griso 1100 didn’t fit into any one particular category. Carrying Guzzi’s signature transverse V-Twin engine, this one measured 1151cc and could move the Griso along quite nicely. If you like a set of curvy mountain roads combined with comfortable scenic byways, the Griso 1100 is an excellent candidate to ride. It flows through corners gracefully but doesn’t urge its rider to push their limits. It’s a great companion for comfortable rides.
Moto Guzzi Norge 1200
For those who like sport and touring in equal doses, there’s the Norge 1200. A sport-touring motorcycle in the classic sense, the Norge 1200 is comfortable for two people, has luggage space for a weekend’s worth of stuff, and its 1200cc V-Twin engine has eight valves per cylinder for surprisingly sporty performance.
Moto Guzzi V7
The Moto Guzzi V7 carries with it a ton of history, as it’s one of Moto Guzzi’s most important motorcycles. That history is too long to cover here, so instead, we’ll focus on the present-day V7 family. A minimalist design at its core, the V7 family branches off into several different off-shoots that cater to a wide variety of styles and tastes, whether you like modern or just modern retro. At its heart is an 850cc V-Twin that delivers a friendly amount of power riders of all skill levels can enjoy.
Moto Guzzi V9
The Moto Guzzi V9 is a little misleading because it’s powered by the same 850cc engine as the V7, but it’s styled in a more classical, almost cruiser-like way. For those who really want to relax and enjoy the scenery – but also want to enjoy the occasional twist and turn every now and then.
Moto Guzzi V100 Mandello
Moto Guzzi’s latest model, the V100 Mandello is a new direction for the brand. New from the ground up, the V100 celebrates Moto Guzzi’s history while keeping an eye on the future. At its core, the V100 is a sport-touring bike in a way the Norge never could be. Its 1042cc V-Twin engine is modern by any definition. Still, the V100 stakes its claim in Moto Guzzi history as a bike that focused on using aerodynamics to make the ride more comfortable. It does this through flaps on both sides of the fairing that open or close depending on speed and other settings to move and deflect air around the rider.
Things to Know About Renting a Moto Guzzi
They’re Beginner Friendly
With models like the V7 being so small and lightweight, nothing is intimidating about it. Then as you get comfortable with a Moto Guzzi’s characteristics (the side-to-side engine sway at a stop, for example), you’ll be ready to tackle any of the other Guzzi models. Depending on the model, they all feel strangely similar, just with more or less power and weight.
They Provide Excellent Ride Quality
Engine vibrations are nicely damped, so you hardly feel anything. Meanwhile, the seats are well-padded for comfort over the long haul. Add to that supple suspension, and Moto Guzzis make excellent motorcycles for long days in the saddle.
They’re Very Stylish
There’s nothing quite like a Moto Guzzi. The styling of any Moto Guzzi is unique already, and when you add the layout of the transverse engine sitting out there in the open, it’s hard not to stare at one going by – or even at a stop. Moto Guzzis attract attention, so be ready to talk to people.
You’ll Feel the Power
The unique way the engine is laid out in the frame means you can’t help but feel it when you twist the throttle. The power comes on in a friendly, linear fashion, and the shaft drive ensures power is smooth from the engine to the tire.
They’re Incredibly Fuel Efficient
Moto Guzzi engines don’t drink fuel at alarming rates, meaning you can enjoy your cruise for a while without worrying about finding a fuel station. Depending on the model, you might find a large fuel tank, too, making it even less likely range anxiety will be a problem.
