Las Vegas to Death Valley — 3-Day Self-Guided Motorcycle Tour
Ride a demanding 565-mile desert loop from Las Vegas through Death Valley, Mojave National Preserve, historic Route 66 country, Kingman, Hoover Dam, and Lake Mead. The tour consists of three full riding days and two nights on the road across Nevada, California, and Arizona.
Day 1 covers approximately 160 miles from Las Vegas to Furnace Creek. Leave the city behind and ride toward Pahrump before reaching Death Valley Junction and Highway 190. The road crosses one of the starkest landscapes in North America, surrounded by open desert, rugged mountains, and long stretches with little development. Furnace Creek provides a below-sea-level overnight base inside Death Valley.
The second day is the longest stage at roughly 300 miles. Return toward Death Valley Junction and follow Highway 127 south to Baker. Continue across Mojave National Preserve, where volcanic terrain, desert mountains, and vast empty roads replace the low basin of Death Valley. Ride east to Needles, cross the Colorado River into Arizona, and follow I-40 to Kingman, the “Heart of Historic Route 66.”
Day 3 covers approximately 105 miles back to Las Vegas. Follow Highway 93 north from Kingman toward the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead area before returning the motorcycle in Las Vegas. The final stage is shorter but still includes open desert, wind exposure, and major temperature swings.
This short tour has the character of a much longer expedition. The first day drops into one of the lowest and hottest basins in North America; the second crosses multiple desert environments and three states; the final day closes with two of the region’s best-known engineering and water landmarks. Furnace Creek and Kingman also provide contrasting overnight stops—desert oasis and Route 66 town.
Death Valley is an extreme environment. Avoid riding during dangerous heat, carry more water than expected, use sun protection, fuel whenever possible, and check park alerts, road closures, tire condition, and weather before entering remote sections. Cell coverage and roadside services may be limited, and strong winds can develop quickly.
