Texas Hill Country — 3-Day Self-Guided Motorcycle Tour
Ride a compact three-day loop from Austin through Fredericksburg, Leakey, the Twisted Sisters, Kerrville, and Luckenbach. The itinerary is built around Texas Hill Country’s ranch roads, limestone canyons, river valleys, small towns, German-Texan culture, and some of the state’s most technical paved motorcycle routes.
Day 1 leaves Austin and heads west into rolling ranch country. Stop in Fredericksburg for its German-influenced Main Street, food, coffee, and fuel before the road becomes more demanding. Ranch Road 337, one of the famed Twisted Sisters, delivers sweeping curves, elevation changes, and canyon views on the approach to Leakey and the Frio River.
Day 2 is the core riding stage. Depart Leakey early and tackle Ranch Roads 337, 335, and 336. The Twisted Sisters loop combines nonstop curves, steep climbs, tight switchbacks, rugged canyon terrain, and long sections with little traffic. After completing the loop, head east toward Kerrville on faster sweepers and river-lined roads for a more relaxed finish.
The final day returns to Austin through classic Hill Country backroads. Stop in Luckenbach for its live-music history and laid-back atmosphere, then continue through rolling hills and ranch country until the Austin skyline reappears.
Central Texas can exceed 100°F, especially in the afternoon. The booklet recommends an early start, offline maps because rural phone coverage can be weak, and fuel before the longer country sections. The tour may also be shortened to two days and one night.
The route’s focus is riding rather than destination tourism. Fredericksburg provides the cultural stop, Leakey serves as the gateway to the Frio Canyon region, and Kerrville offers a comfortable overnight after the most technical day. Ranch Roads 337, 335, and 336 are the centerpiece, but the approach through wine country and the return through Luckenbach prevent the loop from feeling repetitive. The itinerary is also presented as adaptable to a shorter two-day version for riders with limited time.
