Arizona and Grand Canyon — 3-Day Self-Guided Motorcycle Tour
Experience a compact but spectacular 695-mile motorcycle loop through some of Arizona’s most recognizable landscapes. This three-day ride begins in Phoenix, climbs through Sedona and Flagstaff to the Grand Canyon, follows historic Route 66 west to Kingman, and returns through the Sonoran Desert.
Day 1 is the longest stage at approximately 320 miles. Leave Phoenix and ride north as the desert gradually gives way to Sedona’s towering red-rock formations. Pause near Cathedral Rock, then continue through Oak Creek country toward Flagstaff, where pine forests and cooler mountain air replace the heat of the valley. The final stretch leads to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, where sunset casts changing colors across the immense canyon walls. Spend the night near the rim, with time to explore overlooks and take in one of the world’s most dramatic natural landscapes.
Day 2 covers approximately 185 miles from the Grand Canyon to Kingman. Ride through Williams, a lively Route 66 town filled with vintage signs and classic roadside character, before continuing across Arizona’s high desert. Seligman preserves the quirky Americana of the Mother Road, while the route toward Kingman opens into broad desert views and rugged mountain scenery. Kingman’s Route 66 history, retro motels, diners, and museums make it a fitting second-night stop.
The final 190-mile leg heads south from Kingman toward Phoenix. The route passes through desert towns and ranch country, with possible stops around Lake Havasu City, Wikieup, and Wickenburg. Saguaros, open desert, and the distinctive profile of Vulture Peak mark the return to the Sonoran Desert before the loop concludes in Phoenix.
This is a concentrated long-distance ride, with three substantial riding days and major changes in temperature and elevation. Conditions can range from intense desert heat to cool weather near Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon. Riders should check forecasts, carry layers, download offline maps, plan fuel stops carefully, and remain alert for wildlife, loose gravel, and rough pavement in remote areas.
