California Coast and Yosemite — 8-Day Self-Guided Motorcycle Tour
Experience 1,085 miles of California’s most celebrated coastal and mountain scenery on an eight-day loop from San Francisco. The route combines the Pacific Coast Highway, Monterey, Big Sur, California wine country, Sequoia National Park, Yosemite, Tioga Pass, Lake Tahoe, and the Sierra foothills.
Begin with an arrival day in San Francisco, where the Golden Gate Bridge, waterfront, historic neighborhoods, and city dining provide an ideal introduction. The first riding day heads south for approximately 120 miles toward Monterey. Follow the coast through oceanfront towns and dramatic cliffside scenery, with opportunities to stop around Half Moon Bay, Santa Cruz, Carmel-by-the-Sea, Bixby Creek Bridge, and the Monterey Peninsula.
Day 3 continues for roughly 140 miles along the Big Sur coast toward San Luis Obispo. The highway hugs the Pacific above steep cliffs, redwood groves, beaches, and landmarks such as McWay Falls. Finish in San Luis Obispo, whose walkable downtown and local restaurants provide a relaxed end to a highly scenic day.
The route then turns inland for approximately 145 miles toward Visalia. Ride through rolling hills, agricultural country, and the Paso Robles area before approaching the Sierra Nevada. From Visalia, the longest mountain stage covers about 230 miles through Sequoia National Park and toward Yosemite or El Portal. Giant sequoias, forest roads, granite walls, and the first views of Yosemite’s cliffs make this a major highlight.
The next 200-mile stage crosses the high Sierra toward South Lake Tahoe. When open, Tioga Pass delivers high-altitude curves, granite peaks, alpine lakes, and overlooks near Tenaya Lake before the route continues past Mono Lake and the eastern Sierra. Lake Tahoe provides a scenic overnight stop beside clear mountain water.
The final 250-mile ride returns to San Francisco through the Sierra foothills and Northern California backroads. Pine forests, small towns, ranches, and changing terrain lead back toward the Bay Area and the Golden Gate.
Weather can vary sharply between foggy coastal roads, warm inland valleys, and cold mountain passes. Tioga Pass is seasonal and may close because of snow. Riders should verify road conditions, carry layers and rain gear, plan fuel stops, download offline maps, and remain alert for wildlife, gravel, debris, and temporary Pacific Coast Highway closures.
This is a self-guided tour, so you can set your own pace and adjust stops along the way. Booking the Experience includes a detailed tour booklet with the complete itinerary, mileage, route notes, suggested attractions, restaurants, lodging, rider tips, and Google Maps links with scenic waypoints.
