Washington D.C. — 8-Day Self-Guided Motorcycle Tour
Ride a 730-mile historical and mountain loop from Washington D.C. through Gettysburg, Northern Virginia, Shenandoah National Park, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Roanoke, Charlottesville, Richmond, and Fredericksburg. The tour includes six riding days, seven nights, and time to explore the nation’s capital before and after the ride.
Begin in Washington D.C. with the National Mall, monuments, museums, and historic neighborhoods. Pick up the motorcycle and ride approximately 100 miles toward Gettysburg, where the battlefield, National Military Park, and preserved Civil War-era town provide the first major stop.
Continue from Gettysburg to Leesburg through the historic countryside surrounding Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Northern Virginia. From Leesburg, head toward Front Royal and enter Shenandoah National Park. Skyline Drive follows the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains through hardwood forest, overlooks, and fall-foliage country before reaching Waynesboro.
The next stage joins the Blue Ridge Parkway for a 100-mile ride toward Roanoke. With commercial traffic and billboards restricted, the parkway emphasizes long mountain views, forest, rivers, and relaxed curves. From Roanoke, travel east through the Lynchburg and Charlottesville region before reaching Richmond, where early American, Revolutionary, and Civil War history converge.
The final riding day follows the historic corridor toward Fredericksburg and Washington D.C. Fredericksburg offers preserved streets, museums, taverns, and nearby battlefields before the route returns to the capital for motorcycle drop-off.
The booklet lists temperatures from approximately 30–90°F. Pack layers and rain gear, download offline maps, fuel before entering mountain roads, and reserve lodging early during fall foliage and peak tourism periods.
Daily distances range from 100 to 170 miles, leaving time for historic sites rather than treating each city only as an overnight stop. Gettysburg, Skyline Drive, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Charlottesville, Richmond, and Fredericksburg each reward several hours off the motorcycle. The loop also changes character steadily—from urban monuments and Civil War landscapes to Appalachian ridgelines, college towns, Tidewater history, and the final approach back to Washington.
