Great Lakes — 8-Day Self-Guided Minnesota Motorcycle Tour

Ride a 675-mile loop from Minneapolis through Minnesota’s lake country, iron range, boreal forests, Boundary Waters region, and the North Shore of Lake Superior. The tour includes six riding days, seven nights, and arrival and departure days in Minneapolis, with motorcycle pickup in Cottage Grove.

After exploring the Twin Cities, begin with a 130-mile ride north toward Brainerd. Follow portions of the Great River Road as the Mississippi corridor gives way to farmland, forests, and lake country. Brainerd and the Gull Lake area provide a relaxed Northwoods first stop.

Day 3 covers approximately 85 miles to Grand Rapids. The route passes the Mille Lacs and Crosby area, where former Cuyuna iron mines have become clear lakes, before reaching the edge of the Wilderness Scenic Byway. The next 60-mile stage follows Highway 38 through Chippewa National Forest toward Virginia. Rolling forest, bogs, fishing lakes, bald-eagle habitat, and the history of the Mesabi Iron Range define this short but scenic day.

The tour’s signature stage runs about 135 miles from Virginia through Ely and the Boundary Waters corridor to Grand Marais. Highway 1 climbs through spruce and fir forest before Lake Superior suddenly appears ahead. Grand Marais offers a working harbor, galleries, local food, and a true North Shore atmosphere.

Day 6 follows Highway 61 for roughly 110 miles to Duluth. Take time for Lutsen, Tettegouche State Park, Split Rock Lighthouse, Gooseberry Falls, Silver Bay, and Two Harbors. The road stays close to the largest Great Lake and finishes near Duluth’s Aerial Lift Bridge. The final 155-mile ride returns inland through Nemadji State Forest, Hinckley, and Cambridge before ending in Minneapolis.

The mileage is intentionally moderate, leaving time for state parks, lake overlooks, forest stops, and the small communities along the route. Food and overnight suggestions in the booklet emphasize Northwoods lodges, local fish, wild rice, brewpubs, and waterfront stays rather than rushing from city to city.

Minnesota weather can change quickly, and Lake Superior may be much colder than inland areas. Pack layers and waterproof gear, download offline maps, fuel before remote forest sections, and watch for deer or moose near Ely and the Boundary Waters.

This is a self-guided tour with no fixed group schedule. Booking the Experience includes a detailed tour booklet with the complete itinerary, daily mileage, route guidance, recommended stops, dining and lodging suggestions, rider tips, and Google Maps navigation links with scenic waypoints.
