Colorado — 8-Day Self-Guided Motorcycle Tour
Ride a 1,050-mile loop through the heart of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, connecting Denver, Glenwood Springs, the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, the San Juan Skyway, Mesa Verde country, the San Luis Valley, Leadville, and Vail. The tour includes six riding days, seven nights, and arrival and departure days in Denver.
After arriving in Denver, begin with a 260-mile ride west through the Rockies. The route leaves Interstate 70 near Lawson and follows a scenic loop through mountain forests and high-country roads before returning to the interstate for the approach through Glenwood Canyon. Glenwood Springs provides the first overnight stop and the opportunity to visit its famous outdoor mineral hot-springs pool.
Day 3 covers approximately 170 miles from Glenwood Springs to Montrose. Ride through Carbondale and across mountain country toward Hotchkiss, then follow State Route 92 along the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Deep overlooks reveal the Gunnison River far below, surrounded by narrow walls, dark cliffs, and ancient exposed rock. Continue to Montrose for the night.
The following 135-mile stage begins on part of the Million Dollar Highway before turning toward Ridgway and the western side of the San Juan Skyway. Ride through cowboy country, high plateaus, mountain forests, and the community of Rico before descending to Cortez. This area provides access to Mesa Verde National Park and the Four Corners region.
From Cortez, travel approximately 195 miles east through Durango and across southern Colorado to Alamosa. The route follows US 160 through high valleys and national-forest scenery, with Mesa Verde offering an important cultural stop before departure. The next 190-mile day heads north through Saguache and Salida, then climbs toward Leadville at more than 10,000 feet before continuing to Vail.
The final 100-mile ride follows I-70 east from Vail through Clear Creek and the Arapaho National Forest corridor, returning to Denver for motorcycle drop-off and a final overnight.
Expect major elevation changes, winding roads, rapidly changing weather, and temperatures ranging from warm valleys to cold mountain passes. Carry layers and rain gear, download offline maps, fuel before remote stretches, and reserve lodging early during peak season.
