Palm Springs and Big Bear — 3-Day Self-Guided Motorcycle Tour
Ride a 550-mile loop from Los Angeles through Southern California’s desert, mountain, and forest landscapes. The tour links Ortega Highway, Lake Elsinore, Idyllwild, Palm Springs, Joshua Tree, Big Bear, the San Bernardino Mountains, and Angeles National Forest over three riding days and two nights.
Day 1 covers approximately 185 miles from Los Angeles to Palm Springs. After picking up the motorcycle near LAX, head south toward Ortega Highway, a winding mountain road overlooking Lake Elsinore. Continue inland to the mountain community of Idyllwild before descending toward the palms, desert heat, and resort atmosphere of Palm Springs.
The second day is the longest stage at roughly 225 miles. Leave Palm Springs and ride through Joshua Tree’s distinctive desert environment before climbing toward Big Bear. The route shifts from open desert and rock formations to winding mountain roads, pine forest, cooler air, and alpine lake scenery. Spend the second night in the Big Bear area.
Day 3 covers approximately 140 miles back to Los Angeles. Ride along the backbone of the San Bernardino Mountains and through Angeles National Forest, finishing the tour on some of Southern California’s best-known mountain roads before returning the motorcycle.
Conditions can change substantially during a single day. The booklet lists a 40–90°F range and advises riders to bring layers and rain gear, download offline maps, fuel before remote mountain or park sections, and reserve lodging during busy periods.
This compact itinerary is built around contrast. The first day links coastal Los Angeles with Ortega Highway, Idyllwild’s mountain setting, and Palm Springs desert architecture. The second moves from low desert through Joshua Tree before climbing into the Big Bear alpine environment. The final day stays in the mountains and forests until the route drops back toward the Los Angeles basin. With all three days devoted to riding, the Experience delivers substantial mileage without requiring a full week away.
