Midwest — 8-Day Self-Guided Motorcycle Tour
Ride a 1,050-mile loop from Chicago through Illinois, Missouri, and Wisconsin, combining historic Route 66, Lincoln country, St. Louis, the Mississippi River, Mark Twain’s hometown, Galena, Madison, Milwaukee, and the Harley-Davidson story. The itinerary includes six riding days, seven nights, and arrival and departure days in Chicago.
Begin with a 205-mile ride from Chicago to Springfield on the old Route 66 corridor. Stop at roadside-Americana landmarks around Braidwood and Pontiac before reaching Illinois’ capital and its Abraham Lincoln history. Day 3 covers approximately 100 miles to St. Louis, with opportunities to visit the Lincoln Home, New Salem, the Dana-Thomas House, Cahokia Mounds, Collinsville’s giant catsup bottle, and the Chain of Rocks Bridge.
The longest stage runs about 290 miles from St. Louis to Galesburg. Head north to Hannibal, Missouri, the boyhood home of Mark Twain, cross the Mississippi back into Illinois, and finish in Galesburg, known for Carl Sandburg and its restored Seminary Street district.
Day 5 covers approximately 220 miles to Madison. Ride through Moline, follow the Mississippi corridor north, and stop in Galena, whose preserved 19th-century streets recall its steamboat-era importance. Continue into Wisconsin and spend the night in Madison.
The next 140-mile stage heads to Milwaukee. The booklet highlights Wauwatosa, Harley-Davidson’s powertrain operations, the Harley-Davidson Museum, and Milwaukee’s Third Ward and Water Street. The final 95-mile ride follows Lake Michigan south to Chicago, where the motorcycle is returned and the loop concludes.
The route blends major cities with places that are best understood from a motorcycle: old Route 66 pavement, Mississippi River crossings, preserved downtowns, prairie roads, Wisconsin lake country, and Lake Michigan. The schedule also leaves room for Lincoln sites, Cahokia Mounds, St. Louis, Mark Twain history, Galena’s historic district, and Milwaukee’s motorcycle landmarks.
Expect temperatures from roughly 30–90°F, changing lake weather, rain, wind, and rural stretches with limited services. Pack layers, download offline maps, reserve popular lodging in advance, and verify current museum or factory-tour availability.
