Northern California — 8-Day Self-Guided Motorcycle Tour
Ride a 980-mile loop from San Francisco through Sonoma and Napa wine country, the Mendocino Coast, redwood forests, the remote curves of Highway 36, the Sacramento Valley, and Bay Area backroads. The tour includes six riding days, seven nights, and arrival and departure days in San Francisco.
Begin by exploring San Francisco before crossing the Golden Gate Bridge on an 85-mile ride to Santa Rosa. The route passes Sausalito and loops through Sonoma County, Napa Valley, Calistoga, vineyards, hot springs, and rolling wine-country roads.
Day 3 covers approximately 130 miles to Fort Bragg. Ride through Sebastopol and Bodega country before joining Highway 1 along the Pacific. Point Arena, ocean cliffs, beaches, and the rugged Mendocino Coast make this one of the tour’s signature stages. The following 120-mile day continues north through forest and redwood country toward Fortuna, with Humboldt Redwoods State Park and Northern California’s unspoiled landscapes providing the main attractions.
Day 5 is approximately 145 miles from Fortuna to Red Bluff on Highway 36. Expect smooth curves, logging towns, forest, open mountain roads, and long stretches with little traffic. This isolated eastbound crossing captures the wild character of inland Northern California.
The next stage covers roughly 290 miles to Sacramento. The primary route heads through Chico and the Sacramento Valley, while the booklet also describes a longer alternative through Lassen National Forest. River roads and California’s capital provide the overnight destination.
The final 210-mile ride follows less-traveled roads through Locke, Isleton, Antioch, Concord, Berkeley, and the Bay Bridge back to San Francisco. An alternative reaches Marin County and Muir Woods before returning across the Golden Gate Bridge.
Daily road character changes continuously: vineyard lanes and hot-spring country on the opening stage, exposed Pacific curves near Bodega and Point Arena, shaded redwood highways around Humboldt, nearly empty mountain bends on Highway 36, and broad river-valley roads approaching Sacramento. The return offers either Delta communities and the Bay Bridge or a Marin and Muir Woods variation.
Weather may shift from cold coastal fog to hot inland valleys. Carry layers and rain gear, download offline maps, fuel before remote sections, and watch for deer, gravel, fallen branches, grade changes, and temporary road closures.
