When Is the Best Time to Ride the Twisted Sisters?

Timing matters out here, and if the Twisted Sisters route is on your list, you're going to want to aim for the spring or fall. Spring weather sits right in that sweet spot where you're comfortable all day without baking inside your gear. Fall gives you the same comfortable temperatures with less humidity, and the roads tend to be quieter once summer vacation season wraps up. You can ride in summer if you need to, just start early before the heat gets brutal and bring more water than you think you'll need. Breaking Down the Three Sisters Motorcycle Route

While Ranch Roads 335, 336, and 337 are often talked about as a single entity, riders who've been through multiple times will tell you that each sister has a distinct personality worth appreciating on its own. Here's what you can expect from each section of this legendary route.

Ranch Road 337

Ranch Road 337 takes you southwest from Leakey for about 21 miles toward Camp Wood. The corners here have better sight lines than what's coming later, so you can see your exits and build confidence with the road surface before things get more demanding. The elevation changes enough to keep it interesting but the grades are manageable, and there's usually decent pavement throughout this stretch.

Ranch Road 335

Ranch Road 335 runs about 29 miles and this is the section that'll test your skills. The turns come at you faster with less space between them, and plenty of corners tighten up mid-turn instead of opening like you'd expect. The road gets narrow with drop-offs on the sides in sections, so there's nowhere to go if you get in too hot. You'll spend more time in second and third gear here than anywhere else on the loop.

Ranch Road 336

Ranch Road 336 covers about 14 miles before you hit US-83 back to Leakey. The turns space out more compared to 335 and the road widens back up, plus the pavement condition tends to be better through this section. You'll ride through some canyon scenery along here with the elevation dropping down and climbing back up as you head north.

Planning Your Twisted Sisters Texas Ride

Getting the basics right before you head out makes this whole experience way more enjoyable, so here's what you need to sort out.

Best Direction to Ride

Run the loop counter-clockwise starting from Leakey. You'll hit Ranch Road 337 first to warm up, then tackle 335 when you're fully dialed in, and finish with 336 when you're ready to relax a bit. This order also puts the sun at your back for most of the afternoon if you start mid-morning.

Gas Stops

This is one of the most important steps before you go because there's almost nothing out here:

• Fill up in Leakey before you start: This is your best bet and easiest option
• Camp Wood: Small station at the junction between 337 and 335, good spot to top off at the halfway point
• Vanderpool: Another option but it's a small town with limited hours

Don't assume you can find gas whenever you need it. These are tiny Hill Country communities with one station each, and they're not always open. If you're running a bike that gets under 40 mpg, plan your stops carefully.

Food and Rest Stops

• Frio Canyon Motorcycle Stop in Leakey: This is home base for Twisted Sisters riders. Good food, cold drinks, and you can talk to other riders about the route
• Vanderpool: Has a cafe and small store for supplies
• Camp Wood: Basic options for food and drinks

Riding Pace

Take your time through here, especially on your first run. The corners keep coming and riding over your head on roads you don't know is how people get hurt. You can always come back and push harder once you've learned where everything is.

How to Get There from Austin or San Antonio

From Austin, you'll head west on US 290 toward Fredericksburg, then drop south on Highway 16 until you hit Medina where you can pick up Ranch Road 337. The drive takes about two hours depending on where you start from, and the route through the Hill Country is pretty enjoyable on its own. San Antonio riders have it a bit easier with roughly 90 minutes of riding, heading west on Highway 90 to Sabinal before turning north toward Leakey.
