Ride 2: The Talimena National Scenic Byway

The Talimena trades the Pig Trail's constant corners for 54 miles along the crest of the Ouachita Mountains between Mena, Arkansas, and Talihina, Oklahoma. You'll pass overlook after overlook, with scenic pull-offs spread across the ridgeline from Arkansas into Oklahoma. You'll pass by Queen Wilhelmina State Park (with the only restaurant in the area) and Rich Mountain Fire Tower (one of the highest viewpoints along Arkansas) along the way.

Is the Talimena Byway Worth Riding?

The Talimena Byway earns a spot on almost every Arkansas Ozarks itinerary because it gives you a completely different day of riding than the rest of the area's roads. Instead of focusing on the next corner, the route encourages you to slow down, pull into the overlooks, and spend time taking in the Ouachita ridgeline.

Ride 3: The Boston Mountains Scenic Loop (Old US-71)

Ride 4: Mount Magazine (AR-309)

Mount Magazine is the ride riders add when they want to spend part of the day at Arkansas's highest point instead of simply riding through it. The road leaves Paris and spends the next 12 miles working its way to Cameron Bluff Overlook and Mount Magazine State Park, where a short walk takes you to Signal Hill, the highest point in the state. Continue south toward Havana, and the road drops back into the Arkansas River Valley before passing through Altus, home to some of Arkansas's oldest wineries. You'll be riding for about 28 miles from start to finish.

Ride 5: The Buffalo National River Corridor (AR-43 and AR-74)

The Buffalo National River Corridor combines two of the Arkansas Ozarks' best roads into one ride. Start on AR-43 south from Compton before turning east onto AR-74 toward Jasper, passing through Ponca and Boxley Valley along the way. The route cuts through quiet forests, open valleys, and one of the least-developed parts of the state before ending near the Buffalo National River.

Boxley Valley is the highlight of the ride. The Buffalo became America's first national river in 1972, and elk have called the valley home since they were reintroduced in 1981. Ride through around sunrise or sunset and you have a good chance of spotting them grazing in the fields.

When to Ride the Arkansas Ozarks

The best time to ride the Arkansas Ozarks is from late September through October. October is when most riders plan their trip, thanks to peak fall color in the Boston Mountains, daytime temperatures in the mid-60s to low 70s, and lower humidity than summer. The riding season runs from March through November, and spring is the next best window if you don't mind a higher chance of rain in April and May.

Peak fall color in the Arkansas Ozarks usually runs from October 15 to 25. The Boston Mountains, including the Pig Trail and Old US-71, typically change first, with the Talimena National Scenic Byway following about a week later. October is the busiest month of the riding season, so book lodging 4 to 6 weeks ahead, especially during Bikes, Blues & BBQ.

Bikes, Blues & BBQ is one of the country's largest charity motorcycle rallies, bringing riders from across the U.S. to northwest Arkansas every fall.
