I’ve long favored the Road Glide because its capabilities defy its bulky body. While its 900-pound wet weight puts it near the top of the heavyweight touring food chain, its heft is deceptive because the massive front fairing is attached to the frame. That placement enables this barge on wheels to turn more easily than you might expect.

Cornering enhanced linked ABS and traction control, as well as drag-torque slip control. This mitigates sudden deceleration due to sudden downshifts by matching engine rpm to rear wheel speed.

You’ll also train yourself not to rely on the gearshift indicator, as it only works when the clutch is released. The low 26.1-inch saddle height is comfortable and easy to manage at stoplights; there’s plenty of road presence.

And it has excellent touring credentials. Comfy ergos and protective fairing aside, the stretched saddlebags swallow a heap of gear (but not helmets – they’re not that wide). I like the simple lever to open or close them, and they’re lockable too. There's a thumb-controlled joystick on each switchblock to navigate the menu system. The system has a heap of features though, like integrated sat-nav, comprehensive audio, a trip computer and more, and it adds to the bike’s polished feel. There’s a USB charging outlet for your phone in one of the two (non-lockable) glove compartments, plus a 12-volt outlet on the left side of the cockpit.

This heavyweight package is smooth, soulful, and disarmingly maneuverable enough to appeal to all but the most skeptical of riders.

• Returns must be before 11:30 AM if scheduled in the morning. Late returns without prior notice may incur a full rental day charge
