There are realistically three different popular and major routes you can take to get from Palm Springs to San Diego. This 2.75-3 hour drive (depending on traffic and what route you pick) can offer numerous worthwhile stops and scenic routes. Southern Cali offers no shortage of sights worth exploring. Which path will you choose?

Option 1: Palm Springs to San Diego via I-15 S

Depending on traffic, this might not always be your quickest option. Use a GPS to determine which route is the fastest with traffic.  

Sometimes you just want to get to San Diego without too many detours, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the ride! This route is one of the quickest ways to get from Palm Springs to San Diego, and it’s smooth and straightforward (pending no typical highway obstacles):

  1. Start by taking N Palm Canyon Dr and CA-111 N to I-10 W. It’s only about 14 minutes and 11 miles before you’re cruising on the interstate.
  2. Once you’re on I-10 W, drive for about 16 minutes (17 miles) and take exit 94 at CA-79 S/Beaumont Ave. This stretch is fast and gives you your first little taste of the foothills.
  3. Follow CA-79 S through Hemet and then N Sanderson Ave. You’ll jump onto Domenigoni Parkway, which feels more relaxed than the freeway but keeps you moving. After about 40 minutes (26 miles), you’ll hit I-215 S.
  4. Stick to I-215 S, then switch to I-15 S. You’re covering some distance here, about 21 miles in 20 minutes. Take the Mission Rd exit (51-Mission Rd) to Old Hwy 395, and you’re really making progress toward San Diego.
  5. Hop back onto I-15 S in Bonsall for a short 11-minute drive (8 miles). It’s quick, and this section starts to feel a bit greener as you approach the coastal influence.
  6. Stay on I-15 S and merge onto CA-163 S for the home stretch. You’ll cover around 42 miles in 38 minutes, then take exit 1B onto 4th Ave/Fourth Ave. Just a quick 3-minute jaunt, and you’ve arrived in downtown San Diego.

Option 2: Palm Springs to San Diego via CA-74 W and I-15 S

Distance: 133 miles, 2.75 hours

Looking for a route that combines a bit of mountain charm with a fast trip to San Diego? This one’s a nice mix of winding roads, open highways, and gorgeous views—all without adding too much time to your drive.

  1. Kick things off by taking N Farrell Dr to E Palm Canyon Dr. It’s just an 8-minute drive (about 3.6 miles), and you’ll be on your way to some beautiful terrain.
  2. From Palm Springs, take CA-74 W. This is where the drive gets exciting, as you wind through mountain roads with some incredible desert and valley views. Keep your camera handy—it’s that good.
  3. Next, connect to CA-371 W and then CA-79 N. These highways take you through small-town vibes and rolling hills, giving you a nice break from the city rush. It’s a little over 2 hours for this leg, but the scenery makes it worth every mile.
  4. Once you hit I-15 S, you’re on the fast track to San Diego. It’s smooth sailing from here, and the transition to CA-163 S brings you right into the heart of the city.
  5. Take exit 1B onto 4th Ave/Fourth Ave, and you’re just a couple of minutes from downtown. In total, it’s about 2 hours and 27 minutes (129 miles) plus a short 3-minute hop into the city center.

Option 3: Palm Springs to San Diego via I-10 W and I-15 S

Distance: 139 miles, 2.75 hours

If you're looking to get from Palm Springs to San Diego fast and hassle-free, this is your best bet. It’s a direct and easy drive that keeps you moving while still offering some nice views along the way.

  1. Start by taking N Palm Canyon Dr and CA-111 N to I-10 W. It’s a short 14-minute stretch (about 11 miles) to get you out of town and onto the highway.
  2. Follow I-10 W, then transition to CA-60 W/Moreno Valley Fwy. It’s a smooth ride through the Inland Empire as you make your way toward I-215 S. The roads are wide and easy to navigate, so it’s a relaxed stretch of the trip.
  3. Merge onto I-15 S, and you’re on the home stretch. This part of the drive is about 128 miles and takes just under 2 hours, with CA-163 S leading you right into the heart of San Diego.
  4. Take exit 1B for 4th Ave/Fourth Ave, and you’re almost there. Just a quick 3-minute drive (0.5 miles), and you’ll find yourself in downtown San Diego, ready to explore.

Palm Springs to San Diego Scenic Route

Distance: 225 miles, 4 hours and 15 minutes

If you’re heading from Palm Springs to San Diego, why not make the drive more interesting? There’s a scenic route with popular spots that we’d personally go out our way for (including famous apple pie). Here’s how you can turn your trip into an adventure with some awesome stops along the way:

  1. Start by hopping onto E Alejo Rd and then E Vista Chino. It’s just a quick 5-minute stretch to get you out of town and onto the road.
  2. Next, follow I-10 E, CA-86 S, and CA-111 S for about an hour and a half (82 miles or so). You’ll pass by the Salton Sea, and trust me, it’s worth a quick stop. The place is weird and beautiful at the same time—totally Instagram-worthy.
  3. From there, take Estelle Rd, Kalin Rd, Gentry Rd, and Bannister Rd. This part is about 20 miles and takes you through quiet desert roads where you really feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere (in the best way).
  4. Hop back on CA-78 W, and you’ll drive through Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. It’s massive and stunning, so take your time here. Then head to Julian, a little mountain town that’s famous for apple pie. Seriously, stop and get a slice. It’s worth it. You can learn more about our pie recommendations in Julian, here. 
  5. From Julian, take CA-79 S and I-8 W all the way to San Diego. It’s about two hours, but it’s a gorgeous drive, especially as you get closer to the coast. Once you’re in San Diego, take the M L King Jr Fwy exit, and you’re practically there. A quick drive downtown, and you’re ready to explore the city.

Morning

7:30 AM - Start in Palm Springs

  • Grab breakfast at Cheeky’s or King’s Highway to fuel up for the day.
  • Depart Palm Springs via CA-111 N to I-10 W.

3:45 PM - Final Stretch to San Diego (1 hr 15 min)

  • Follow CA-79 S and I-8 W into San Diego.
